EIGHT

THE WALL WAS COMING DOWN. BEHIND IT, a storm raged.

Talise knew she was dreaming because the wall had a shimmery quality along with a slight blue glow. Crowds of people surrounded her, but none of them had distinct faces.

Her clothes were even more dream-like. She wore a dark purple gown with silver crescent moons threaded through the silk in a rich brocade pattern. The skirt was ridiculous. Its train trailed at least three dress lengths behind her.

The wide bell sleeves fell down past her feet. Every few seconds, she pushed the sleeves up to her elbows, but they’d fall back down almost immediately.

Most conspicuous, her head felt heavy under the weight of a crown. The thick belt around her waist had been pulled tight, making it difficult to breathe.

She was a princess.

Just as the thought came to her, a strong grip tugged her by the wrist. The folds of her gown tripped her with each step, but the tugging at her wrist only grew more insistent. Talise glanced through the crowd, trying to see where she was being pulled.

Between heads, she could barely make out a small squadron of soldiers, each wearing a tunic with a yellow hem. Her soldiers.

She gasped and glanced back at the wall. Her heart stopped at the sight of it. Danger. The word gripped her, shook her as she stared. Pieces of the wall crumbled to the ground. Some spots looked ready to burst apart.

Bad. This was bad.

Talise ached to rush toward her soldiers. They would need her protection once the wall came down. All at once, the figure pulling her along became distinct. Not just a random person from the crowd. It was… her.

Her?

She pulled herself, but this version of her wore a silk tunic and training pants. This part was the Master Shaper.

Before she could even imagine what that meant, another figure grabbed her other wrist and tugged her the opposite way. The second figure was just a child, but she dug her nails into Talise’s wrist, forcing her to take a few steps in the desired direction.

The glittering tiara and orange velvet dress gave her identity away much sooner than the other. This was Princess Talise.

Master Shaper Talise tugged on the left while Princess Talise dug in her nails on the right. Each pulled her in opposite directions, turning the dream world into a hazy fog. She blinked away the tears that burned her eyes and tried to ignore the tugging.

The wall.

Didn’t they understand? The wall was coming down. It didn’t matter if she was a Master Shaper or a princess. She had to stop the wall from coming down.

She only managed one painful step forward before the wall crumbled before her. Exultant shouts cried out as the wall fell like dust to the earth. The storm behind it thundered and shook the ground.

Her eyes narrowed as she tried to make out who was so happy. The figures around the wall blurred, but one figure she recognized.

Lucian Sato punched a fist into the air while a wide smile split across his face.
